Is its dangerous charging a mp3 player or ipod battery after its life expectancy?

Meaning that when i charge the rechargeable lithium-ion battery for a Mp3 or IPOD, and that the battery is still dead after 8 hours of charging. Even if, i still try to continue charging it, What will happen?
